Fishing Reels for Surf Fishing

Spinning reels are generally used fishing the surf. A reel with a good drag system is usually an absolute requirement. Fishing Rods and Reels for Surf Fishing Line capacity of 12 pound test line should be at least 250 yards. Most fishermen have seen the no stretch advantage of the super braid fishing lines in the past few years. The various super braids have small diameters and no stretch features. The non stretching ability allows you to set a hook into a fish at a greater distance than can be achieved with monofilament fishing line. We prefer the Berkley Fire line Smoke and Crystal and Power Pro Moss Green and Red super braids. The color of the fishing line is not an issue on fishing roods that are used with the various fishing techniques since a fluorocarbon leader is generally used. For casting lures Berkley Fire line Crystal is hard to beat. Line test for bottom type presentations is 12 to 20 pound test. When casting lures we like to use 8 to 12 pound test.

There is a unique type of spinning reel called a bait runner or bait feeder reel. The reels are made by several companies with the Shimano and Okuma being Bait Runner Reels for Surf Fishing the most popular. The bait feeding systems allows anglers to disengage their spinning reel spool and allow their bait to run freely. The bait feeding system incorporates a secondary micro-adjustable drag system at the rear of the reel that allows for precise adjustment of the spool for bait control. In order to disengage this system you simply turn the handle. The On/Off lever on the rear of the reel will automatically disengage the bait feeding system so you can fight your fish with the main drag system. This feature allows light biting fish to mouth and swim with the bait without feeling resistance.
